Directions

With the completion of the motorway widening and variable speed limit works, the M4 is now much improved. However, the bottleneck at the Brynglas Tunnels can still be a problem and Friday evening rush hour can be very busy from the Magor services westbound to after Newport. We have therefore included alternative routes to approach Rudry.

For those travelling from the north it is possible to avoid the M4 altogether and we suggest that you do this if possible.

There will be signposts to Pentreffest placed at the J30 Motorway roundabout, the Draethen Junction, the Rudry turn by the Pizza Hut roundabout in Caerphilly, and at other junctions to avoid problems in the dark.

M4 travelling from the East

Leave the M4 at junction 28 and turn north under the motorway on the A4072, Forge Road, towards Bassaleg, Rogerstone and Risca.

At the first roundabout bear left on the A468 for Bassaleg, Rhiwderin and Caerphilly.

After about 3 miles, heading for Caerphilly, at the end of a long slightly downhill stretch there is a turn for Lower Machen to the right, and at a sharp right hand bend in the road, a turn for Dreathen to the left.

Follow the Draethen road over a narrow railway bridge, through Draethen village and continue climbing the hill until, at the brow of the hill you will see the Maen LLwyd pub on your right.

Pass the pub and take the next right turn. Follow the road down towards Rudry. The Parish Hall is on your right, shortly after passing the village school.

M4 travelling from the South

Leave the Motorway at Junction 30, heading north away from Cardiff, signposted Rudry.

Follow the lane, ignoring turns to the left, until you reach a T-junction. Turn right at this junction (it is further than you think). Continue down this road, round several tight bends, down a steep hill and up the other side to another T-junction opposite the Maen Llwyd pub.

Turn left, then right immediately past the pub. Follow the road down towards Rudry. The Parish Hall is on your right, shortly after passing the village school.

M4 travelling from the West

Leave the M4 at junction 32 and turn north under the motorway on to the A470, towards Pontypridd and Merthyr Tydfil.

At the second junction bear right, under the dual carriageway, onto the A468 for Caerphilly. Watch out for the speed camera on the hill.

Follow the A468 around the back of Caerphilly passing over 4 roundabouts. Signposting will change to Bedwas and Newport.

At the fifth roundabout (Pizza Hut on your right) take the second exit, leaving the main road, and then turn left into a small lane signposted Rudry. (The sign is on the right hand side pointing into the lane).

Follow the lane past a Cattery and up into Rudry village. Pass through the village - the road rises through some trees and the hall is to the left and set back from the road, and is quite hidden. The car park should be easily seen.

Avoiding M4 travelling from the North

Leave the M5 at Strensham services and take the M50. Proceed towards Ross. From the roundabout at Ross follow the A40 south (dual carriageway), taking the junction at Raglan and heading towards Abergavenny. At Abergavenny take the A465 Heads of the Valleys road to Merthyr Tydfil, where you turn south onto the A470 following signs for Cardiff.

After passing Pontypridd take the junction onto the A468 for Caerphilly.
